I
am a photography student in the art department, currently in the process of completing
my third semester of being involved in the department. I have been in the
studio lighting class as of the beginning of the 2013 spring semester and I
have to say that from the very beginning of being in the photo department to
now, I have gained knowledge so valuable to me. Knowledge that has allowed me
to explore ways to expand on and create more work in new and different ways. I
would say that it has opened up a pathway to work on completely new levels.
My
current work is mostly what I produce in studio lighting, which are projects
assigned to us, but which still allow us the accessibility to choose the
subject matters, the type of lighting, etc., permitting us to use our
creativity and produce images of our choice. Although I have work coming
together in that class, it is not work that I plan on expanding on for now.
In
addition to my work for the studio lighting class, I am focusing on working on
a side project, which also works with the usage of techniques that I have
learned this semester. As of working on my “Illuminant Life” series last
semester inspired by Rinko Kawauchi’s body of work, “Illuminance”, I have
gained a lot of interest in working with a special focus on the usage of different
light sources to cause illuminating scenes, whether artificially or naturally
lit. Working in studio lighting has opened me to the idea of trying a new
project, being similar to my old work, but using the studio lights as my light
source. For this project I want to use the strength of the lights to reflect
the impact that death has on people. Working with the studio lights I have
learned that I can manipulate the light to portray the mood of my desired scene
in my images, making it work to my advantage. It has been a process that I have
struggled with, but at the same time learned so much from. It’s all in the
experimenting and trial and error stage at this point, but it is something that
I am enjoying and look forward to watching it evolve. My main influence for
this current work was the experience of having a few people close to me and my
family be diagnosed with cancer and for one of those people being the news that
it was the end of their life would be only two months away. “How would someone
react to that?” I thought. And then I thought about how many people receive
news of their life being at risk daily, and then even about how many people don’t
get warned and just die. What happens when these people find out that they are
facing their life’s end? That is what influenced my current project and that is
what I want to explore through this new process.
